I'm on a (HTC) Dream Quest!

Friday, September 4th, 2009

Given the last blog entry (Just look down<G>) you would think the title should say “I’m on a Vision Quest”.  You’d be right except that is not what I am talking about.  I am trying to get my hands on one of these little suckers.

I have found that using a tool to help manage my incredibly busy life, I simply NEED one of these.  I’ve use the traditional DayTimer calanders in the past, they work fine but obviously have some limitations (try searching for ‘computer’ in one of those!).  A couple years ago I bought a Palm Zire 21.  It worked great until the battery life became 20mins or less and started randomly resetting on me.  So shortly after that happened I bought a Z22 model (used like the Z21 was).  Well it hasn’t lasted me a year before it started doing the same thing.

Last year, before I started to work for RIM, I contemplated the iPhone.  What geek wouldn’t love such a damn cool looking device.  Slick and geeky…..it was the Uber Toy at that point in time.  Since then the market has matured incredibly and many new devices have surfaced.  While at RIM, I had a BlackBerry Curve.  It was great and massively useful to me.  Too bad I had to hand it in when I left.  Still, it was fun and I really leaned towards them, away from the iPhone for the longest time.  Now that my Z22 is on it’s way out, I need something else.

Having reconsidered my position on the iPhone I went off to do my research.  After finding out just how tied into iTunes it is, I immediately had to change my mind.  iTunes doesn’t run on Ubuntu/Linux.  Apple has really locked that down and probably won’t budge for quite some time.  Fine by me, their loss.

Now, given my recent integtration wtih Google I wanted something that would sync with their stuff (GMail, Docs, Calendar…) and since they have phones with their own OS on it, I hunted one down.  I found that for my needs, a HTC Dream is the best one.  There are number of apps that I am looking at specifically which perfectly align with the online tools that I use on a daily basis.

So, if anyone knows of a good deal to BUY one outright, and is local to the Golden Horseshoe in Ontario, I’m all ears.

What is DragonDon up to these days?

Well, I’m glad you asked!

Having been a techie (in a professional capacity for 8 years, in a hobbiesty capacity for…geeze…30 years…) it’s high-time I step up my game.  I’ve made some nice connections over the last few years and things are looking up nicely.  I have hooked up with Vision Resource Group and am now their International Director of Online Media.  This means I get to play in the ‘big pond‘ with some pretty serious players.

I have already met some pretty incredible people and the most single interesting thing about them is their Vision.  They all have a vision.

See, as a typical employee, you usually never care about such things.  To you it’s just some fancy words you tell your board members to make you sound important to keep your high-paying CEO position.  It is a concept that the average citizen cannot and will not take the time to understand.  Yet said average citizen complains that these companies and CEOs make obscene amounts of money.  There is something seriously lacking in our education system and people never make the connection.  That being Vision is everything.

So how does this apply to me?  Well guess what I am doing?  Building my vision.  Take your typical person who you work with.  Most of them walk around looking at where they plant each foot.  Sometimes literally.  Yet when they walk into a pole/car/person, they will complain loudly.  Compare this to someone who walks looking, not only where he is going but farther down the line making a b-line for the goal.  That is what I am doing but with a twist.

What most people miss is that if you aim for your goal and ONLY your goal, you are missing a huge part of the equation.  Your goal should only EVER be a marker but never the end destination.  It should simply be something to note a certain point in your life and you should always continue past that.

So, I’m aiming for the stars :)

Projects in the works can be read about on http://www.vrg-world.com and http://www.johnny-powers-presents.com .  There is sooo much work to be done.  So if you call or email me and I dno’t respond right away, don’t be surprised.  This is both the busiest tiem I’ve ever had as well as the most fun :)

As for my fun stuff, outside of learning the business ropes, I still have my 1978 Plymouth Volare and it’s currently parked in my garage for the winter.  I haven’t updated that blog recently but will do so soon.  For the most part, it’s going to wait and probably get the work it needs, done this winter.

I recently kicked Windows to the curb and installed Ubuntu on my main machine.  An interesting operating system and I have some learning to be done, but that is the point.  Besides, got tired and having extra protection running because of the rampant infections on the loose out there.

Every year keeps getting more and more interesting :)
